I'd like to repurpose more of my machines to Folding@Home but the power draw of most of my older systems makes it problematic.

Looking at a stack like this and the short discussion of it, power draw seems like the general problem. Institutions that have servers and know they have the overhead, like schools, may be in a somewhat better position to contribute, while individuals who want to chip in will run into the power draw bottleneck if they try to scale up.
