It's November 23rd, and I have on my right a Turkish glass full of Serbian Cabernet Sauvignon. My progress for NaNoWriMo is 82K words, though I'm not finished for the night as I report that; the remainder of the relevant work is "fleshing out" edits for the core of the story (under the wrong circumstances, I rush through first-draft parts and don't explore things thoroughly enough).
The irrelevant work, as I call it, is no less useful to the process. A couple of alternate histories (let's pick two or three main plot points, alter them, and see how things go horribly wrong) followed by critical self-examinations are things that should never be seen by human eyes other than my own. The website word count validator is welcome to become self-aware and read that crap at its own risk. Two of these "appended chapters" are slightly more useful because they would actually fit seamlessly into the story. The thing is, they're such tangents from the main plot that the reader probably doesn't care. One involves a character who only appears in the story so that you know what ultimately happens to her, and the other is a cute thing with newlyweds.
The irrelevant work does jog my mind and make me consider what is missing from the relevant work, including continuity with the previous (second) book of the trilogy. It also lets me have enough fun that when I'm going over old copy with fresh eyes, I make that old copy more fun--hopefully more fun to read as well as write.
I was interrupted by a file for editing which was 1/3 the length of my current novel, followed by a three and a half hour file for transcription. I finished the document for editing and completed two hours of transcription, and I am sure I can finish the last hour and a half and send in the transcript with an invoice tomorrow. November isn't over, but with a main-client company dinner in the evening, he can then hand me a cheque instead of having to mail it. Further work in the month would get appended to December's invoice, which ought to be thin anyway.
