I'm not sure how to aggregate my comments about the celebrations in the Netherlands well enough. I feel the desire to personally apologize for how the Canadian-involved Allied effort liberated the east and north parts of the Netherlands and just appeared to sort of sit there, not touching the west until it surrendered.
Part of the reason they didn't invade the west is because the Randstad was one of the most densely populated places in the world at the time and they were afraid of killing massive numbers of people that they wanted to free. At the same time, I expect bad things happened to a lot of people there because it wasn't liberated sooner.
That's probably as far as I want to go with that. In the meantime, someone pointed me to a nice (NSFW?) short story by Neil Gaiman.
