Today I moved a few things. Some instruments went upstairs, pending whatever I do with them, because they were in the basement; if cold was good for instruments, people would keep them in refrigerators.
I have three instruments. I suspect the oboe is going up for resale; it prices fairly well, should be in excellent condition and I never play it anymore. It takes a lot of consistent daily practice to develop the lip strength for a double reed, and I haven't been spending any time at all. If I wanted a woodwind at all I might be better off with single-reed or a type of flute, but I wouldn't necessarily be looking for something else yet. I also have a guitar with medium strings, and playing it for five to ten minutes on one day makes my hand sore in a certain way for the next day; I could try building strength up again the way I actually did it the first time, which was by playing a light-stringed guitar first--this one needs medium or there's really no improvement in sound to justify the price over a less expensive one, or so I'm told. I also have an M-Audio Axiom 49, which my niece has used more than me; if it's not going anywhere, the least I can do is give it a good dust cover, since the chinchilla cage will make this one dusty room.
I also cleared out some plastic cage equipment. Hedgehogs might chew on something once and figure out it's not food because they don't have constantly-growing rodent teeth. Chinchillas will chew on cage furniture, so it's better to surround them with metal (for the parts of the cage that you want indestructible) and properly prepped wood. I can reuse the glass/metal water bottle and two ceramic food bowls.
There's a shopping list given to me by the rescue lady. My cage does come with shelves, a proper pan and a wheel, but I didn't go deluxe--would have been another $100 I suppose. The other items aren't expensive: chewable wooden toys and a wooden hiding cave, pellets for food, fresh hay, rosehips for vitamin C treats, and the higher profile items are chinchilla dust along with a duster (simple fish-bowl will suffice). Yes, my pet will clean himself by jumping in a fishbowl and thrashing around in dust. There are videos of this behaviour, and I will probably make a video of my own to join them.
The cage isn't going where the hedgehog pen was. That was in my room. Dad remarked that it's easier to regulate temperature in the basement. It's more likely that I can put a heater down there if needed, rather than putting an additional A/C unit in my room. This animal copes with cold better than heat; you can guess that from their thick soft fur. Better to dodge heatstroke and have to manage heat in the winter. It's never too hot in the basement. I will have a chill tile in there for the summer.
Other than that, the day was about chasing after my niece and eventually doing work. I will have to do more cleaning/moving things around in the basement, but I have two weeks. I probably won't even buy the food until the last possible minute; best to get that kind of thing fresh.
My room felt different when I deconstructed the hedgehog pen. It really has taken me this long to evict all the unused parts other than the huge plastic cage bottom. I suppose the cube shelving will go next, and all that's left is a small fleece blanket. The chinchilla wants something on top of his cage to make it seem enclosed or sheltered; two of the old liners will probably cover that top, but I intend to sandwich the blanket in between. Call me sentimental. If Liam had a use for it, he could have it.
