Researchers tried using a common reovirus to attack prostate cancer. This virus can lead to a mild respiratory infection or diarrhea in most people.
Normal cells seem to be able to cope, ultimately to fight off this common illness. With the mutated cells specific to prostate cancer, something about them has lost the same ways of defending against the reovirus; it seems to "target" cancer cells because it can ravage them uninhibited while normal cells put up a better fight.
