That genius plan to use my phone more to avoid feeding paper money into machines at $1/20 minutes of internet rates... ultimately cost $800 in data charges.

Well, that was another brilliant caper. I imagine if I pared that down to only when I needed to use the internet, using Google Maps to avoid getting lost at night for example, it would probably have been a more manageable $200.

I know what I won't be doing next time I go abroad.
