Third for the day: The loon's call

I remember picking out a recording of a loon's call in Conan the Barbarian, and laughing because wherever the title character was didn't look like it had lakes or rivers for miles around or wetlands for such fish-spearing waterfowl.
( But a short piece of dialogue from the book just indicated it was a reference to something. )

So, is there a connection between demonology and the innocuous bird depicted on the Canadian one dollar coin, or is this peculiar to Howard's scribblings?
